The area surrounding Monitor and Merrimac Buttes deep in canyons of Southern Utah continue to be some of my favorite vistas in the world. Iron, manganese, and clay minerals exposed to the atmosphere create vibrantly colored rock formations that somehow make inhospitable terrain seem incredibly inviting. Covering this landscape in areas that might kill other plants stands the Utah Juniper (Juniperus osteosperma), which can live up to 700 years. In all phases of its life, the Utah Juniper is integral to bird and animal life and each gnarled trunk is a work of art.
