Becoming Understory

Deeper into the longleaf woods
Nuthatches and warblers sound the alarm
My steps fall silent on hallowed ground
Wind creates a pine noise hum
Caress a bed in long copper needles
Cover the exposed hollows of my frame
Forest wraps me in a whisper
Scent of resin
No resistance
Forgetting I am apart
Sinking into sandy soil
Earth cleansed by fire
Breathing steady
Rooted
