Types of Clouds: A Fine Art Photography Guide

Clouds turn familiar landscapes into temporary worlds. They change the scale of a place, redirect the light, and make weather visible. This photographic guide brings together the ten principal cloud types through fine art landscape photography by Nathan Larson.

Clouds are classified by their height, shape, structure, and whether they produce precipitation. The ten genera used here follow the system of the World Meteorological Organization’s International Cloud Atlas and educational guidance from the National Weather Service. Because a single sky may contain several formations at once, each gallery is organized around the dominant visible cloud type.

High clouds

High clouds generally form in the cold upper troposphere and are composed primarily of ice crystals. Cirrus appears as delicate filaments, strands, or hooks. Cirrostratus forms a thin, widespread veil that can soften the sky and create halos around the sun or moon. Cirrocumulus appears as small white ripples or grains arranged in rows. These collections are still developing as new photographs are identified and made.

Middle clouds

Middle-level clouds include altocumulus, which forms rounded patches, rolls, or bands, and altostratus, a broad gray or blue-gray layer that often allows the sun to appear dimly through it. Their quieter structure can create subtle transitions of tone and light across mountain, prairie, and coastal landscapes.

Low clouds

Low clouds sit closest to the landscape and often define the emotional character of a photograph. Stratus spreads as a low, relatively uniform layer. Stratocumulus combines a broad layer with rounded or cellular elements. Nimbostratus is a thick, dark precipitation-bearing layer associated with sustained rain or snow.

Clouds with vertical development

Cumulus clouds are the familiar detached heaps with defined edges and generally flat bases. When strong convection drives them upward, they can grow into towering cumulonimbus clouds—the deep thunderstorm clouds associated with heavy rain, lightning, and dramatic anvil-shaped tops.

Photographing weather and atmosphere

Cloud photography is less about isolating the sky than observing how atmosphere transforms land. A cloud may become monumental above a small barn, flatten a mountain range into layers, or open briefly to send light across a field. These galleries emphasize that relationship between weather, place, and the temporary forms moving through both.

Cloud identification from a single photograph is sometimes interpretive, especially when several genera are present. The labels in these galleries describe the dominant visible formation and are intended as a visual field guide rather than an operational weather observation.
