Fresh Cut Grass
A fly ball high in the air.
Center field.
At 10 years old, I'm Dale Murphy,
Going back to the wall for the catch.
Dodging my sister's bike
And the garden hose,
Making the diving grab
On the back patio.
Crowds of magpies cheering me on.
Winding up and throwing the ball
As far as I can
Into the empty field behind my house.
Grasshoppers scatter—
Out at the plate.
Tossing my glove to the side,
The red Toro sputters back to life,
And I return to mowing
The pristine outfield of my dreams.
