John at Cedar Key

Twenty-nine, eyes still wide,
with tattered boots and steady stride.

One thousand earnest miles,
through remnants of our nation's trials.

The endless Gulf lay wide and grand,
he dug his toes in the sunset sand.

Palms clapped against the breeze,
warm tides hummed in measured ease.

Cedar roots gripped weathered shell,
where ancient tribes once dwelled and fell.

His heart full and senses alive,
watching beauty flow and thrive.

Not because it must inspire,
nor bend to man's unceasing fire.

Leaning back, earth holds him tight,
waves stretch silver in fading light.

Clear in his mind, a truth decreed:
let nature flow wild and free.
