July Divers

Swallows stitch the afternoon,
heat clings to hemlocks,
zigzagging through heavy light
insects flicker, then disappear.

Barn swallows skim dry fields,
tree swallows cut midair,
purple martins spiral high,
each bird knowing its place
in a story about to unfold.

A vulture sways
over the deep green hills
circling the lake, unhurried,
above what no longer moves.

The divers wade again,
soft splash against the reeds,
one more pass through the murky
where nothing
wants to rise.
