Paris

Paris is a city best experienced through movement—climbing, wandering, looking up and out. At the Louvre, the Winged Victory of Samothrace stands at the top of a grand staircase, caught in mid-stride. Even without a head or arms, the sculpture feels alive, the carved fabric of her robe pressed back by an unseen wind. Seeing her in person, rather than in a textbook or on a screen, makes all the difference.

From the towers of Notre Dame, the city stretches out in all directions. The Seine snakes through the center, bridges linking the islands to the rest of Paris. The rooftops, packed tightly together, soften the edges of the streets below. Standing up there, you notice things easily missed at ground level—how the light shifts across the skyline, how green the parks are even in winter, how the old and new mix without trying too hard.

Beneath the Eiffel Tower, the structure feels less delicate than it does from a distance. The iron beams crisscross overhead, massive and industrial, but arranged with precision. Tourists gather underneath, tilting their heads back, watching the elevators climb toward the top. Walking away, the tower disappears and reappears between buildings, always in view but never quite the same.
